Two Cumbrian building projects are competing for honours at a prestigious national awards ceremony.

The Outward Bound Trust’s upgraded Ullswater Centre and the Sunbeam Music Centre, both near Penrith, have already been successful at the Northern Building Excellence (NBE) Awards earlier this year.

Now they are finalists in the Local Authority Building Control Building Excellence (LABCBE) Awards in London, where they will compete against winners from 11 other regional awards.

Construction firms Atkinson Building Contractors and Day Cummins were behind the £3 million upgrade of buildings and accommodation at the Ullswater Centre.

Part of the project included works to the Main House, a grade II listed building.

The project specification included retaining as much of the building’s historic fabric and detail with minimal disruption.

The work earned them the Best Educational Building award at the NBE awards.

At the same event, the Sunbeam Music Centre – a £2 million music therapy centre which is home to the Annie Mawson’s Sunbeams Music Trust – was judged Best Small Commercial Project.

Thomas Armstrong (Holdings), MawsonKerr, JS Engineering Design, Johnsons, DACS and JH Partners were involved in this new build project, which involved designing and installing unique acoustic inserts and bespoke d elements to create synergy between the architecture and building use.

Both projects were nominated by Eden District Council’s building control team.

Alastair Richmond, building control manager, said: “To achieve success on a regional level in already quite an accolade, but being able to showcase the quality of Eden’s contractors to a national audience is a fantastic opportunity and one the companies and individual concerned should be rightly proud of.”

The LABCBE Awards will be held on November 10 at the Westminster Park Plaza in London.
