MORE than 2,300 whisky enthusiasts have paid £695 to become members of the Lakes Distillery's Founders' Club.

The distillery at Setmurthy, near Bassenthwaite Lake, launched the club to promote the Lakes Malt, which goes on pre-sale next September priced at £95 for a 70cl bottle.

Members receive exclusive bottlings of the Founders' Spirit from the first 100 casks of what will be Cumbria’s first single malt whisky.

They receive a 70cl bottle every year for 10 years, and get the opportunity to taste the developing whisky during that time through matching miniatures.

The spirit is maturing now and will become a malt whiskly after 1,095 days' maturation December 17, 2017.

Members also get lifetime distillery tour passes, a 10 per cent discount code, an engraved mention on the 'founders’ plaque' at the distillery's warehouse and an invitation to annual Founders’ Day celebrations, which this year are on December 16.

The distillery says that only 20 per cent of the 2,975 Founders’ Club memberships remain.
