A CHILDREN'S summer school has been set up just in time for the school holidays.

Camp Cumbria will be based in Coniston at the village's primary school and will be open to children aged five-to-14 years for four weeks in August.

This is an Ofsted-registered project designed to offer a wide range of activities for anyone who attends.

It has been set up by Tony Martinez - who also runs Cumbria Teaching Agency in Ulverston.

He said: "Most camps have only got one or two activities and we have gotten Ofsted registered and will also be able to offer things like arts and crafts and sports but it will also be just the same as a school, learning through different activities.

"I have kept the age limit at 14 so that the camp doesn't get too old."

Other activities on offer at the camp will include survival skills, dance, baking and music and circus skills.

The camp is expected to play host to around 250 children every week, most of whom will be bussed to the venue.

"We have basically borrowed the school for four weeks," Mr Martinez said.

The staff will be provided by his agency.

He added: "This camp will give staff something to do in the summer; a lot of people leave teaching because there is nothing to do in the summer, so I am trying to bridge that gap."

He said the idea for the venture came to him when he was looking at what his son Luis could do during his summer holidays. And he says there is already a lot of interest in the camp.
