Emily White, of Carlisle-based System Training , has won the R oad Transport Industry Training Board forklift operator of the year competition after demonstrating her skills at the NEC in Birmingham.

Miss White, who is the company's national training planner, will now go on to compete in an international contest next year.

Property adviser North Associates has appointed Jonathan Garbutt as project director in its commercial property department.

Mr Garbutt has joined the firm, which is based in Carlisle, from London-based Hope Construction Materials .

He will be charged with helping to grow the company's complex portfolio service as well as that of parent business WYG .

Sellafield's Helen Edwards has beaten off competition from 100,000 people to be named the nation's best health and safety officer.

She is lead safety representative at Sellafield's operations division and was given the Health and Safety Representative Award at the Trades Union Congress Awards .

Valerie Smart and Steve Minto have been taken on at the University of Central Lancashire's Westlakes Campus.

Ms Smart, of St Bees, has held several research positions in the pharmaceutical industry. After a career break to raise her children she was involved in a local genetics research project at the Westlakes Research Institute and for the last 12 years has worked as a science teacher.

She will work as project manager to implement development plans for the centre.

Mr Minto, of Penrith, moves from the C umbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust . His role will be to support the development of the centre as well as the resident professors.
