One of the South Lakes' biggest businesses has dug deep to replace £2,000 in charitable donations that were stolen after last week's Kendal Torchlight Carnival.

The cash was taken during a break-in at Manna House on Aynam Road at the weekend.

Papermaker James Cropper - in Burneside - has matched the amount that was taken.

It will be split between organising next year's event and Torchlight's charity partners.

Cumbria Police is still appealing for information on the original break-in.

A statement from Kendal Torchlight read: "We've received some fantastic news this morning. Following on from the sad news that much of the charity fund was stolen over the weekend, James Cropper have stepped forward to donate £2,000.

"This will replace all the money that was taken and ensure everyone's hard work wasn't for nothing.

"We are immensely grateful for this support and can't thank them enough. As would have been the case with the collection money, the donation will be split between Torchlight and our charity partners.

"We also thank everyone who has donated through GoFundMe - this money will also be shared. If you do still wish to donate the page remains live at www.gofundme.com/2ugk3fwc

"Local charities and organisations such as Kendal Torchlight rely on the support of local people and businesses, and this further highlights the fantastic community we have in and around Kendal.

"Thank you James Cropper."
