FUTAMURA Chemical executives were due to formally open their cellophane operation at Wigton today.

The Japanese company completed a £60m takeover of the plant from Innovia Films this month.

Futamura has become the world's largest manufacturer of cellulose film as a result of the acquisition.

The opening includes a traditional Japanese Kampai Sake barrel ceremony and a plant tour. Representatives from the Japanese Embassy and Cumbria's Lord Lieutenant, Claire Hensman, are scheduled to attend.

Futamura has said it is committed to protecting jobs at the site, which employs about 270 people who transferred from Innovia.

It will operate at Wigton alongside Innovia, which will concentrate on its polypropylene films' business.

One of Innovia's former commercial managers, 62-year-old Keith Fell, has come out of retirement to become Futamura's general manager for Europe.
