Construction work at a Cumbrian factory has been halted - after a council ruled it was unauthorised.

Eden Council has served a Temporary Stop Notice on Omega Proteins Ltd, after receiving reports from residents that there was "significant" work going on at land north west of the Penrith site.

There was no planning permission in place, as an application for the erection of a storage building, hardstanding, new vehicle access, car park and various other works has yet to be considered by planners.

The council also issued the legal notice to Thornton Meat Company Limited, which owns the land, and Metcalfe Plant Hire Vehicles Ltd, which were on site and carrying out work.

A planning officer visited the site after receiving reports on Monday morning, and discovered large excavation works were being carried out on the land that is subject to a planning application.

All work must stop immediately - and breaching the stop notice could lead to a fine of up to £20,000.

Councillor Michael Slee, Eden Council's portfolio holder for economic development, said: "Where possible we would look to work with local businesses and help them develop in the right place.

"However, it is unacceptable for anyone to knowingly breach planning control and think they can cause harm and disruption to our residents without suffering any consequences.

"After receiving this notice I hope that the company, and others, think very carefully before carrying out any further works that could land them in court.

"I would urge anyone who is unsure of what they can and cannot do under planning law to come and seek advice from our planning officers who can keep them on the right track.”
