This lovely old picture serves as a reminder how many people once used to shop for clothes.

The Watford Observer is delighted to share pictures from the archive at Watford Museum and this week we look back at the scene from Watford Market more than 60 years ago.

The museum’s volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said: “When clothes shopping, it's lovely to have someone help you try on a garment.

“This photo, taken in May 1960 by Bob Nunn, shows one of the clothing stalls in the old market.

“Watford has had a market in several places in the town centre.

“In a way, a market is just like a supermarket, but with many individual traders who can give each of their customers personal attention. A friendly suggestion to encourage customers to make a purchase and, in this instance, a handy mirror to check the fit of a new cardigan.”
