An iconic pub in Broughton-in-Furness is set to re-open this year under a successful local company.

CGP (Coordination Group Publications) is hailed as the UK's No.1 educational publisher with its books used in nine out of 10 schools in England.

A Cumbrian success story, CGP has been based in Broughton-in-Furness since its beginnings in 1995 and has strong ties to the local community.

The group says it has always been keen to support projects and businesses in the local area and took on the well-loved Prince of Wales in Foxfield with refurbishments underway.

In Cumbria: Broughton's Black Cock Inn closed its door in early 2023 after its then parent company Lakeland Inns Group went into liquidation.

A spokesperson for CGP said: "We are currently refurbishing the Black Cock Inn in Broughton, which closed in January 2023. When no other buyers came forward, we stepped in to purchase the property.

"Our aim is to re-open it as a traditional real-ale pub with a friendly social atmosphere.

"Work is now underway on the heating and electrics throughout the property. The bar area and all five en-suite guest rooms will be restored to preserve the original character of the 17th century building.

"We’re also fully refurbishing the annexed manager’s apartment, which includes three bedrooms and an open plan kitchen-diner.

"We are still looking for a tenant landlord to run the Black Cock when it reopens later in 2024.

"We’re open to applications from people who are keen to run a friendly village real-ale pub — if you’re interested, please contact Kie Jackson at CGPEstates@cgpbooks.co.uk before the end of April."

CGP announced in a local Facebook group that it was looking to re-open the pub as soon as possible, keeping the same character and feel as before.

An exact timescale isn't in place yet however the group aims to provide updates as and when they happen.

The news was met with relief and enthusiasm by locals.

One man said: "Thanks for keeping a Broughton institution going."

One woman said: "Thank you look forward to the grand opening" whilst another man added: "Be good to see this place reopened."
