Every Friday we ask somebody in Cumbria’s business community to tell us how they keep fit…today it’s the turn of Tom Patrick Kenny, Area Manager North West of Zip World Limited in Windermere

How many times a week do you like to exercise?

I exercise 5 times a week

What sort of exercise do you do?

I train in the gym before work. A mixture of resistance training and cardio. I also swim twice a week.

Do you have any fitness goals?

Longevity. I want to have as many years in front of me as possible, to keep fit while my children grow up so I can take part in active pursuits with them throughout their lives.

What’s the most physically challenging thing you have done in your life?

I will start with the least physically challenging thing I have done in my life. During the 2020 lockdown, I went from having a physically demanding job to being sedentary at home. I quickly gained a lot of weight and by 2021 I was 2 stone heavier. In 2021 I went on a fat loss journey and after 6 months had lost the 2 stone in fat and rediscovered a love for fitness. I have since kept off the fat and stuck at the gym and fitness now forms part of my daily routine.

How does keeping fit impact on your work?

Working at Zip World can be very physical. Part of my job involves inspections on ropes courses and whenever the opportunity presents itself, I love to get stuck in. We work outside in all weathers and I spend as much time as possible hanging out of the trees on ropes.

Which sportsperson/fitness expert do you most admire?

Roy Keane. Growing up I was, and still am, a huge Manchester United fan. Roy Keane has always been an inspirational figure to me. His commitment to his work, his commitment to staying in peak physical condition during his playing days and his leadership skills are often unparalleled in sport. They do however say you should never meet your heroes, I fear this maybe the case with Roy!

When in your life did you feel at your fittest?

Right now. Over the last 2 years I have took training much more seriously and feel much better for it.

On days when you don’t feel like getting out of bed, what motivates you to get up and go?

I never feel like this. I guess I am one of the fortunate people who never has a problem with getting up and getting out. It drives my missus mad!

How do you ensure a work/life balance?

I spend as much time as possible with my family. Work is a means to having a quality family life and I am in an extremely lucky position where I can do that whilst also thoroughly enjoying my job. Zip World promotes having a positive work/life balance and so I have always felt supported in this aspect.

What’s your top tip for remaining motivated?

Have children. Nothing has motivated me more in life than the pursuit of being a healthy, happy Dad to my children.
