A skate park in Barrow has been given a makeover led by the young people of the town.

The skate park at Barrow Park was closed to the public all day last week while the work took place.

Northern Mural Company was commissioned for the job and hosted workshops with the children alongside BarrowFull and artists immyzillustrationz and James Archer.

The young people decided what they wanted for the space they used regularly and got a chance to see their ideas come to life.

Artist immyzillustrationz said: "Myself and another artist James Archer joined in the project and during its completion the children were great. They asked loads of questions about the project as well as the other work we create as professional artists.

"At the end, the children who were involved in the initial design process came for a ‘meet and greet’ where they could talk to us a little bit more.

"We definitely saw how much of an inspiration we had been to the children who were interested in art - especially the little boy who brought the taco drawing. He said that he enjoyed the project so much that he has asked BarrowFull to do more projects around the community.

"When we left after each day of painting, it was lovely to see all of the regular users of the skatepark swarm back into the area. By engaging with the locals, we know that we’ve brightened up the space and seeing their excitement throughout the process and seeing the space being used are always the most rewarding parts of working a public project.

"We’ve loved working as a team to brighten up the area and we would absolutely love to create more pieces similar in the future."

The area has now been given a new lease of life with different art styles that have come together on a large, interactive piece. The artist are encouraging anyone who knows of another space that needs brightening up or revamping to get in touch with them.
