A SHOPPER who won a 90-second trolley dash on the opening day of a new store donated her items to charity.

The first Food Warehouse by Iceland in Cumbria opened in South Lakeland Retail Park, Kendal, on Tuesday.

A staff member said the queue line for the new shop reached Matalan as people wanted to see the new store.

The Food Warehouse replaces Poundstretcher at the retail park.

This type of storefront is a new offering from Iceland with a standard shop already in the centre of Kendal. Food Warehouses offer wider aisles and a bigger selection of food, which means they are designed for people to bulk buy.

This new Food Warehouse is the first of its kind in Cumbria. The nearest Food Warehouses in the north-west are in Blackpool and Preston.

The shop celebrated its first day by offering sweets and treats to people in the store.

A Warburtons van parked outside The Food Warehouse gave bread and crumpets to people coming out. People who queued at the store before 7.30am received a raffle ticket to be in with a chance of winning one of the three trolley dashes.

The winners had 90 seconds with the store to themselves to fill their trolleys with as much as they like for free.

The store manager Karen Booth said the trolley dash went down well.

"One lady actually donated her shop to the homeless shelter which I thought was really nice," she said.

"We've had raffle tickets. We've given out a grand's worth of vouchers, and finally, we've had sweets at the checkouts.

"It's been very good, we've had some excited customers. We had a queue all the way to Matalan. It's a new format. We already have an Iceland in town which is pretty popular, it's easier to park, nice wide aisle and good offers."

The new shop has 21 staff in total and might recruit more in the future depending on how busy the store becomes.
