A CARLISLE fishmonger is making a splash on a national scale having been selected as a finalist in a prestigious retailer award.

Bells Fishmongers has netted a place in the northwest large retailer final of the Farm Shop & Deli Show awards 2023, after being put forward by a customer.

Bells, who have been trading in fish and shellfish since the 1970s, said they were delighted to be entered into the final for the third time.

Phillip Bell, who has been working with his dad Tony since leaving university, said: "It's always nice to be recognised.

"We were nominated by a customer and then a mystery shop comes in and chooses the finalist.

"We would like to thank the entire Bells team for smashing it out of the park day in and day out, always going the extra mile, and keeping this ship steaming ahead at full speed.

"Priceless loyalty and hard work by the boatload.

"A huge shout to all the bells a ’fish’ionados (customers), their fierce loyalty and continued support have helped us go from strength to strength. You cracking bunch you," he said.

The family-run institution operates two shop fronts in Carlisle, a main store in Kingstown and a fish counter at Pioneer Foodstore in Rosehill.

Across the northwest, Bells will be facing stiff competition as they compete against Kendal's Loving Artisan Bakery and Roast Mutton, Liverpool's Kami's West Derby, Ingleton's Country Harvest, Manchester's Chorlton Cheesemongers and Gazegill Organics, near the Yorkshire Dales.

The results will be announced on April 25.

"Over the last 20 years, there's been plenty of businesses have had a pop at doing what we do, but we're one the only ones still standing," owner Tony said previously.

Being so close to the Scottish border enables Bells to source from Scotland, England and the Shetland Islands to bring you the best Shetland Mussels & fish in the UK.

The Kingstown premise is open between Tuesday to Saturday, usually from 8am to 3pm, except Saturdays.
