AN application to open a 'modern social hub' on Walney has been submitted to Barrow Borough Council.

A change of use application would see the renovation of a disused launderette at 53 Amphitrite Street into a coffee shop and restaurant, along with a hot food takeaway provision.

The planning statement, submitted by the owner of the building John Martin, cites the lack of a 'modern coffee outlet' on Walney, amid the influx of staff at BAE Systems and the growing overall demand for the beverage.

The statement says: "The coffee industry grew by an impressive 7.9 per cent in 2018 (source Esquires Coffee).

"Industry revenue in the UK is expected to rise from 2023-2028.

"Coffee is the most widely consumed global beverage after water.

"There are an additional 6/7,000 people to be employed by BAE Systems in the coming years.

"Local amenities and infrastructure should reflect this growth."

The premises comprises 80 square metres and would seat approximately 30 customers.

Plans include the installation of a kitchen, store room, toilets, and serving counter.

The statement says that a takeaway would not be the primary purpose of the business but that all items on the menu would be available for consumption off the premises.

According to the statement the menu will include coffees, teas, smoothies, seasonal drinks, along with pastries, desserts, and baked goods.

Breakfasts items will be served, along with pizza, pasta, salads, sandwiches, and hot soup.

Mr Martin summarises his proposal in the statement, saying: "The intention is to provide a modern social hub for the community – there is a continued trend of people supporting local businesses and communities, and more people working from home and coffee shops.

"There are several traditional public houses on Walney but not a modern coffee outlet.

"The financial investment required to set up this commercial kitchen according to relevant planning and building regulations ensures total commitment to the project.

"The business will have an appealing, aesthetic-looking, comfortable interior for welcoming customers.

"Interior design is a key skill of the main investor."

The statement says that the proposed new business will employ a full-time chef, full-time front-of-house person, and four part-time workers.
