Harrogate Town boss Simon Weaver felt his side were “rock solid” in keeping Carlisle United at bay.

The visiting boss was delighted with the strong defensive efforts that denied League Two’s top scorers.

Harrogate became only the fifth side in the league to prevent the Cumbrians from scoring this season – and only the second to win at Brunton Park.

After Paul Huntington’s own-goal handed Harrogate a 1-0 victory, manager Weaver said: “It was a really satisfying three points.

“It was a hard fixture, it was always going to be. We’ve got a lot of respect for Paul Simpson and his team – the crowd turned up in their droves to support them, because they’re the top goalscorers in the league and deservedly in the promotion hunt.

“It was a great away performance, keeping a clean sheet, and I’ve got to give the lads credit.”

Weaver felt the experience of recent signings Tom Eastman and Anthony O’Connor, as well as fellow new boy Matty Foulds, was key to Harrogate’s defiance at Brunton Park.

“The pedigree we’ve got at the back now with the three new additions…they were rock solid today and I’m sure they are enthused about the win as much as we are,” added Weaver in a club interview.

“It was good for new players to settle in by winning a game. I thought they were rock solid, anticipation, doing all the ugly stuff…what you’ve got to do at a place like this, where they put the ball in the net at every opportunity, and they’ve got goalscorers at the end of it.

“That defensive instinct that we’ve missed at times was present here.”

There was, though, a sour note for Weaver at the end of the game as defender Kayne Ramsay suffered a facial injury which required a trip to A&E.

He was hurt after a challenge with Omari Patrick late in the game.

“Kane is in a bad way,” said Weaver. “That’s why it flattens you a bit, seeing him after the jubilation of winning – his face is really cut, and we’re worried about his cheekbone.

“He’s off to A&E right now.”

Harrogate’s first win in six moved them up a place to fifth bottom, three points above the relegation zone.

“We need to build up a bit of momentum now and can’t rest on our laurels, but we can at least enjoy the weekend and the week’s training ahead,” added Weaver.

“There’s no let-up at this level – we’ve got some big fixtures against big teams coming up, and that’s why we want to be at this level, and we want to deserve more victories like this to climb the league.”
