A bench has been installed in a Cockermouth park in memory of the town's WI members past and present.

The group has also raised £1,000 for its charity of the year, Cumbria Youth Alliance (CYA). It is thankful to all the people who supported their fundraising efforts.

"Our members wanted to do something to support the escalating problem around the increase in mental health issues in young people exacerbated by Covid and the ensuing isolation some young people have endured," said president Yvonne Lambert.

The WI recently purchased and dedicated a new bench which has been placed in the Harris Park Extension “in memory of our members both past and present”.

Cockermouth Town Council facilitated the purchase and installation of the bench, near to the children’s play area and in the shade of two trees.

“Members wanted the bench to be accessible to all but I am sure it will be appreciated by the many parents and grandparents who use that area," said Mrs Lambert.

Members had a little opening ceremony with coffee and cake.

Cockermouth WI meets on the first Monday in the month in the Methodist Hall on Lorton Street from 7.30pm. New members are welcome.
