A popular shepherds' meet which has been running for more than 100 years will be held this weekend.

After a break due to Covid, Wasdale Shepherd's Meet had to be scaled down last year. The show may have been smaller in size but the support was still big.

This year, the meet is back to its full schedule and the organisers are looking forward to welcoming everyone to the show field at Wasdale Head on Saturday.

"There's been so much interest in the show this year," said secretary Mike Naylor, whose family has been involved for generations.

"We're back to the full job this year and are looking forward to it."

The committee, which includes Mike's daughter, Rebecca, sister Heather Naylor Lopez and her husband Andrew, has been working hard to create a top day out.

The sheep classes start at 10am. Children's sports start at 12.30pm, sheepdog, terrier and pet classes kick off at 1pm. Hound trails are scheduled for 2pm and the fell race at 2.15pm.

There will also be Cumberland Wrestling, from 4pm, and vintage classes, alpacas, crafts and produce stands.

Marathon man Gary McKee should hopefully be setting off the fell runners. The show has sponsored his fundraising efforts two days this week. Mike - aka Monkey Liar after years of winning the World's Greatest Liar - has also sponsored him one day.

"I shall be accompanying Gary this Friday - on my bike," said Mike. "365 marathons in 365 days - it's incredible what he's doing, I can hardly run a bath!"

Last year the shepherds' meet raised £1,800 for local charities. This year they will be raising funds for Macmillan Cancer Support and West Cumbria Hospice at Home, in memory of Anne Nolan, Mike's sister who died of pancreatic cancer 10 years ago.

"I always look forward to the day," said Mike. "It was my father's dream, he loved the show. It's been in the family for generations."

It is believed that the shepherds’ meet started off with farmers from Wasdale meeting the farmers from the adjoining valleys of Ennerdale, Buttermere, Borrowdale, Eskdale and Langdale, who walked their rams over to Wasdale Head to trade them, swap them or hire them.

Admission is £5, under 12s free.
