A BREWERY on an Ulverston industrial estate has withdrawn a retrospective planning application after concerting part of its unit into a 'brewery tap' public bar.

Lakeland Brewhouse, on Lightburn Trading Estate, was granted a licence for the sale of alcohol for seven days a week in July, and has since been operating as a public bar as well as a working brewery.

During the licensing consultation period, however, several residents expressed concerns about the new use of the unit, and so South Lakeland District Council deemed it necessary for a change of use application to be granted.

One resident who appeared at Kendal Town Hall to express concerns was Dr Brian McQuillin, who said that there existed a risk that 'our streets and gardens will become open-source toilets' for drinkers at the Lakeland Brewhouse Tap.

"When you go onto it [the industrial estate] and when you leave it, they have got to go through our residential area," he said.

Councillor David Webster, who was chairing the meeting, asked Kirsty Ridge, director of Lakeland Brewhouse Ltd:

"Is it a bar with a brewery, or is it a brewery with a bar attached?"

Ms Ridge said: "The brewery is the majority business.

Ms Ridge responded to residents' concerns about potential problems caused by drinkers:

"It is not and never will be our intention to cause nuisance and upset,
"The Tap is literally there so people can come along and have a drink and see the brewery in operation."

The bar has eight taps and two hand-pull pumps, featuring beers from Lakeland Brewhouse, uTown, and a number of guest beers.

The statement attached to the latest withdrawn change of use application said:

"It is acknowledged that some of the above objections raised are not licensing matters but are matters for the Planning Authority and Highway Authority, which are intended to be assessed as part of this retrospective planning application.

"The main consideration is whether or not the development can be considered ancillary to the light industrial processes of the brewery.

"The applicant considered the proposals to be ancillary to the brewery due to its limited floor area and resultant low occupancy numbers, and was the reason why no approach was made to the Planning Department about the proposals."
