A VETERINARY Centre in Windermere has raised concerns about people walking their dogs on the fells in the middle of the day.

Oakhill Veterinary Centre has been made aware of dogs suffering from heat exhaustion after being taken for walks around Bowness and the fells despite the scorching sun.

Kathryn Sharpe, the senior veterinary surgeon, said: "Heat stroke can occur in temperatures as low as 20 degrees Celsius if your dog is exercised too rigorously or is suffering from underlying conditions.

"Heat stroke is caused by the body overheating, usually because of prolonged exposure to heat or physical exertion in high temperatures. Symptoms include heavy panting and difficulty breathing; excessive drooling; abnormal gum colour; lethargy, disorientation, or incoordination; collapse or vomiting and can potentially lead to seizures.

"Always test the pavement with your hands for 5 seconds prior to walking your dog. If it’s too hot for your hands it’s too hot for paws! Watch out for any licking or chewing at the feet, change in pad colour or loss of pad, any blisters or redness."

She also asked owners to 'consider your dog's usual exercise regime' before taking it out on the fells.
