A FAMILY run furniture store is expanding.

Nigel Byrom's The Family Furnisher has taken over 10 Wildman Street, which is next door to its current store, for a new range of ‘eco-friendly’ furniture.

The project has been taken on by Aaron Byrom, son of Byrom’s owner Nigel Byrom.

Aaron is the fourth generation of the Byrom family to be involved in the business.

Byrom’s furnishings was founded over 90 years ago by Solomon Byrom and has remained in the hands of the family ever since.

Nigel Byrom said the move was ‘good for Kendal’ and told residents of the town to ‘watch this space’ as work continues to transform the unit ready for opening.

“It’s good for Kendal,” said Mr Byrom.

“We’re looking at different aspects, more eco-friendly furniture and flooring.

“There are limited things like that at the moment, but we’ve been able to get different products.

“My son, who is now fourth generation, he’s been on with this since the beginning of Covid.”

It is not the first time the business has expanded, with previous shops in different locations in the town and also the creation of Castle Furnishings on Castle Street, which sells end of line furnishings and discontinued stock.

“In 2015 we moved into the K Village,” said Mr Byrom.

“He bought a shop then and we expanded, and now he’s expanding again.

“Which is great, his great grandfather started the business over 90 years ago.

“It’s a long-established family business.”

Mr Byrom said there was never the perfect time to expand in business but said the availability of the unit next door was not an opportunity to be missed.

“You don’t often get the opportunity to get the shop next door,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to him opening it.

“There’s no good time in business to expand, when you’ve been around for a long time you go with the flow and it’s sad to hear of other shops closing.”
