THE green light has been given to an application for a premises licence for a prospective pan-Asian restaurant in Ulverston.

Permission has been granted for the sale of alcohol between 11am and 10.30pm seven days a week at 5 Cavendish Street.

Kirsty Ridge, co-director of applicant Inno Hospitality Collective Ltd, told yesterday's meeting of the district council's licensing sub-committee: "I wanted to be able to bring a new dining experience to Ulverston."

Five objections to the application were received from residents. Four of these were withdrawn or resolved after amendments to the initial application were made.

"It's not our intention to upset the local residents," said Ms Ridge.

"We want the local residents to be our customers.

"A lot of people on the street have supported our application."

South Lakeland District Council licensing specialist Donna McCarthy told the meeting that one of the representations had not been resolved. This was why the application was brought before the committee.

The representation expressed concerns about the restaurant potentially becoming a nightclub.

Ms Ridge said the restaurant would seat 28 people.

"That would absolutely not be a viable nightclub," she said.

In a report produced ahead of the committee meeting, Ms McCarthy said a licensing specialist had called the objectors and explained that, in order to have hours of operation more conducive to a nightclub, a separate licensing application would need to be submitted.

"The objector was not prepared to withdraw the objection unless the hours of operation were reduced to daytime hours only," she said.

Among the changes made to the application following the representations was the agreement that the rear courtyard would only be used for dining and not as a smoking area.

Cllr Ian Wharton asked Ms Ridge about parking in Cavendish Street.

"There's very, very limited parking on the street and it's mostly residents' parking, so the likelihood is that they [customers] are going to park somewhere else," said Ms Ridge.

The sub-committee granted a licence to the site subject to a number of conditions, including that the premises join the area's barwatch scheme.
