A construction group operating in Barrow is raising funds for a south Cumbrian service that helps pupils reintegrate into mainstream education.

Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, along with some of their supply chain, is donating a 'welfare van' to the South Cumbria Pupil Referral Unit (PRU).

Morgan Sindall is a nationwide organisation that is already heavily involved in the Furness area, as they are currently building the D58 and D59 Facilities for BAE, the largest investment on Devonshire Dock Hall since the construction of the site itself.

A spokesperson for Morgan Sindall said: "We believe in being a responsible business and enhancing the communities in which we work.

"The van will enable the PRU to transport students to different locations to undertake many environmental tasks and will open up opportunities for the school to venture further afield and assist them with the children who have socialisation and other problems.

"Currently, the children have to use public toilets for welfare and miss out on the experience as they cannot go into public areas due to anxiety."

South Cumbria PRU, which is based at Newbridge House in Ewan Close, Barrow, work on a referral basis, commissioned by schools or the Local Authority.

Each referral is supported with appropriate, multi-disciplinary, evidence from agencies such as family support workers, health, educational psychologists and  the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service.

Their mission statement says: "We aim to support and develop pupils so they can re-engage and reintegrate back into mainstream education and be a valuable part of society.

"We encourage pupils to respect the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs."

Morgan Sindall are aiming to raise £10,000 in total to pay for the van, through fundraising and donations by their supply chain and colleagues through various activities, such as hosting local quiz nights.
The organisation hope to have the funds available within 6 weeks, and will announce an official handover when this is to happen.
