News and Star readers have rallied together to wish footballer Danny Hodgson well as he is set to undergo a major operation as the latest part of his recovery.

The 26-year-old's family say it is a major procedure and are "praying" for the best outcome.

The operation follows nearly eight weeks in rehabilitation in Fiona Stanley Hospital in Western Australia for Danny, after he suffered critical injuries in an attack last September.

Danny's family said he received an emergency craniectomy shortly after the assault.

"Tomorrow [Tuesday] he will go back into surgery to have his skull reattached," they added.

"Although the procedure is necessary it is not without risk.

"We know that Danny is in good hands with his neurosurgeon and the dedicated team that will undertake this major operation, and we are praying for the best possible outcome."

Danny's parents, Nicola and Peter, flew to Australia to be with their son after the shocking attack near a train station in Perth last year.

The young west Cumbrian's plight has touched the hearts of people both in Australia, where former Carlisle United academy striker Danny is a player with ECU Joondalup, and in the UK.

Danny's parent said their son has been nicknamed "Ironman" for his incredible fighting spirit throughout his ordeal.

A teenage boy last month admitted causing grievous bodily harm in the attack on Danny, and sentencing is expected next month.

On the News and Star’s Facebook page, readers have shared their messages of luck and love to Danny and his family.

Helene Seymour commented: “Sending good thoughts prayers and loads of love from Cumbria to Danny and his family.”

Gary Preston shared: “Good luck marra, hope everything goes well.”

Sandra Bell added: “God bless and restore your body, young man. Praying for strength for all the family and friends.”

Dorothy McCormack believes that the operation should be successful. She said: “He is having a cranioplasty which will be undertaken by experts. He'll be fine.”

Jackie Richardson posted: “All the best Danny. God bless you and your family. Lots of love and prayers from here in Distington.”
