The A66 remains closed at Cockermouth following a serious crash early this morning.

A collision between a tractor and a Ford car happened at the A66/A595 roundabout, west of Cockermouth.

Highways England say the road is likely to remain closed through the day for collision investigation work at the scene.

Diversions are in place but people are being urged to avoid the area if at all possible.

Emergency services were called at 5.50am this morning to the serious incident.

A spokesman for the Great North Air Ambulance said: "We attended to a report of a road traffic collision this morning on the A595.

"We sent our overnight response car with a doctor and paramedic."

Cumbria Fire and Rescue confirmed that they also attended the scene.

Beep Doctors, an organisation of volunteer doctors, who provide extra medical support in emergencies, confirmed they had also attended.

Highways England said the section of the A66 affected by the incident will remain closed for several hours.

All emergency services are working at the scene in a response being led by Cumbria Police.

A diversion route using local routes has been installed by contractors to send traffic through Cockermouth.

The diversion route is about 16 miles in length.
