A MAN who is attempting a world record caught the attention of Furness Coastguard on Tuesday night.

At 9.42pm the coastguard team were alerted to reports of a lone paddle boarder drifting out to sea at the north end of Walney.

However, this turned out to be Brendon Prince taking on 'The Long Paddle'.

Brendon is currently on a mission to become the first person to circumnavigate mainland Britain whilst standing on a paddle board.

And the former schoolteacher was nearly rescued when residents feared the worst for the paddler.

Brendon’s press officer Will Reddaway explained: “I think a few people saw a paddle board a long way out.

“One of the coast guards follows us on Facebook, so he called us and we confirmed to him it was Brendon.

“I think it just shows the general public wanting to be helpful.

“A little bit of drama, but once we confirmed it was Brendon it was all fine.”

Brendon was in Silecroft on Wednesday and Will says he is now ‘looking forward’ to reaching Scotland later this week.

He revealed: “Brendon is doing good, he is really looking forward to crossing over to Scotland, which is a big turning point in the challenge.”

Supported by a land team to ensure his safety, Brendon will be paddling between six and 12 hours a day as looks to cover roughly 3800km.

The marathon paddle aims to raise awareness of men’s health, protecting the UK’s coastal environment and water safety.

In 2019, Brendon left teaching to devote his time to training teachers and pupils in water safety.

During his paddle, Brendon has been posting updates on his Facebook page, The Long Paddle 2021.

He is also raising funds to build the world's first gamified water safety app for all ages as well as money for seven charities, including Above Water, close to his heart.
