A HUGELY popular beach hut and cafe which serves only locally-sourced goods is gearing up for a transformation to cater to its ever-growing customer base.

Chill & Grill was set up by husband and wife Paul and Alev Stoller three years ago after former owner Jeanne Green handed over the reigns after 33 years.

Based opposite the shoreline at Bardsea, the kiosk has been serving customers for nearly a century, cementing its place as a firm favourite among beach-goers.

Having spent his younger years travelling across the world as a professional golfer and coach, 48-year-old Paul Stoller grabbed the opportunity to take over the kiosk alongside the culinary expertise of his wife who oversees the cooking and baking.

After three years serving the community, the Stollers are ready to transform the kiosk into a larger space which accommodates indoor seating and an outdoor terrace.

"We aim to create a new building in the lovely little spot we've got here," he said.

"It's crying out for a modern building. There's a public demand for it - we have an awful lot of customer support.

"At the moment, it's old-fashioned and awkward to work inside.

"It's had a good life but unfortunately the building isn't practical anymore."

Mr Stoller said the expansion, which is still awaiting planning permission, would also allow the kiosk to open all year around instead of seasonally.

He said: "We'd like to create a bigger space inside so we can have some indoor seating and can serve customers all year round.

"At the moment, we're only able to open six, seven months a year because there's only outdoor seating.

"We'd also like to make the kiosk wheelchair building and install ramps to make it as inclusive as possible.

"We also have plans to create an outdoor terrace for people to sit under as well as indoor toilets."

The owners are passionate about using local suppliers and protecting the environment, recently installing a recycling facility in their garden area.

Their 23 flavours of ice cream are all made in Egremont and sausages, prepared by mum Marion, are bought from Irving's Butchers in Ulverston.

Reflecting on Chill & Grill's future, Mr Stoller hopes the business will remain in the family for years to come.

"I very much enjoy it - I love the ambience and buzz you get here," he said.

"Customers are always in a good mood, there's never any animosity, everyone's laid back and happy to be here.

"I see a long-term future here. Ideally, I'd like to pass it onto our kids, if that's what they want to do.

"We love it here."

Chill & Grill is currently looking for a cook and assistant to help close down the kiosk at night. If you're interested contact the kiosk at 07788 176568.
