BARROW’S Vickers-Armstrong yard was a hive of industry in the 1950s.
Over the decades, in its many forms, the yard has supplied for generations of highly-skilled Barrovians.
The work done by those in the factory in the mid 20th century was the start of the huge industry the town enjoys today.
For more than 100 years the Royal Navy have purchased the ships crafted by Barrow’s skilled workers.
Today, BAE is the driving force for that industry.
Many a proud Barrovian has dedicated their life to the shipyard, from the days of Vickers-Armstrong, Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering to the current BAE Systems.
The work has continued to this very day and has been described as ‘the backbone for the town’s economy’ by MP Simon Fell.
