A craft carpenter from Barrow has taken his support for a cancer charity that cared for his mum to new heights.

John Rose, who lives in Roose with his girlfriend Charlotte, flew to 14,000ft over the South Lakes to make his debut tandem skydive to raise funds for Rosemere Cancer Foundation last Saturday.

Mr Rose asked family and friends to show their support by adding to the £1,023.50 he gave to Rosemere Cancer Foundation in December on the back of sales of his handmade wooden baubles, many of which featured inspirational messages or were personalised for customers to share with family around the globe.

Fundraising is in memory of Mr Rose’s mum, Janet, who was cared for and treated at a Rosemere Cancer Centre after she was diagnosed with cancer at the beginning of last year.

“The jump was a fantastic experience,” said Mr Rose.

“I would encourage anyone who has ever thought of trying a skydive to give it a shot.

“Charlotte was supposed to make her skydive debut at the same time but because of a bad cold, was advised to book a new date in the future, which she will do as soon as possible.”

And it is not the only leap of faith Mr Rose is making this year.

The former insurance broker, who launched John Rose Woodwork during last summer’s lockdown, starts training as a firefighter next month.

“My woodwork is going back to being a hobby,” he said.

“I can’t wait to start my firefighter training.”
