A popular Ulverston chippy has been celebrated as one of the best fish and chip shops in the United Kingdom.

Priory Plaice Fish and Chips, owned by Tony Postlethwaite, was among those included in the Fry Magazine’s top 50 best fish and chip takeaways 2021.

Needing to impress a mystery diner to make the rankings, those who entered had to make a good impression and were marked on more than 40 aspects of the business.

This year, the criteria even included Covid safety.

Those who were ranked in the top 50 were not announced in any particular order.

Celebrating the victory after a tough year for businesses, Mr Postlethwaite said: “It’s great.

“We closed during the first lockdown last year. And this year, after Covid and everything, when it has been quite hard for a lot of businesses, it has been really nice to get mentioned.

“On that list there are a lot of really respected and well-known fish and chip shops so it is nice to just be on the list with them.”

Mr Postlethwaite said the secret to the Ulverston shop's success was ‘a bit of everything’, thanking customers and staff for their contribution.

He said: “We have built a good customer base so we have a lot of good regular customers, the staff have been with me now for quite a while so we have a really good, hard-working team, so I think it is a bit of everything thrown into the mix.

“It’s a good team effort.”

Others in Cumbria who made the list in south Cumbria were Shap Chippy and Frydays of Kendal.
