A BUSINESS in its infancy has burst onto the butchery scene a taken a top award.

The Chopping Block of Penrith has been named as Best New Butchery Business of 2020, beating off huge competition to become one of the leading butcher shops in the UK.

After opening in June 2019, The Chopping Block has steadily built a strong reputation for its exceptional Dry Aged meat, friendly service and sustainable focus.

Owner Chris Clough said he was over the moon and praised his team and family. “What a day! We’re thankful and humbled to be recognised in these prestigious awards, especially against such talented competition.

"As a young independent business, it’s been a tough first 18 months for us. We’re incredibly lucky to have been supported from day dot by the strong community in Penrith and Cumbria. Of course, you hope to win but we hadn’t dared think about it!

"It wouldn’t have been possible without my entire team.

"Their hard work and whole hearted belief in what we’re trying to build here is irreplaceable. And of course, the support of my wife, boys and parents to keep pushing on no matter what. Thank you to everyone who has supported us – I can’t quite believe we’ve done it!”

Organised by Meat Trade Journal, the Butcher’s Shop of the Year celebrates independent butchers and the fantastic work they do. A spokesperson said “It has never been more important to recognise good business, innovation and the thriving community spirit that has been demonstrated over the past year.”

Thirteen awards were presented during this year’s virtual ceremony last night following a significant number of entries. When asked what’s next for him and his team, Chris said “Well it looks like I’ll need to plan a celebration when we’re allowed to get together again!”
