This week is Global Entrepreneurship Week (16-22 November), so to mark it the William Howard School Business Studies students have been involved in a range of enterprise tasks.

Year 9 Enterprise students were given the fun challenge of dreaming up a brand new doughnut design for the coffee shop chain Bruce and Luke’s of Carlisle. Among some of the suggestions from the group are the Oreo Crisp, filled with chocolate, whipped cream and crushed Oreo biscuits, and the Dancing on Ice, decorated with blue icing, and snowflake decorations.

The ‘Design a Donut’ competition has also been rolled out across all the Cumbria Education Trust schools.

Tracey Hill, associate headteacher and careers lead for the trust said: “This is an annual event and is run across all the CET schools to raise awareness of the skills needed to be an entrepreneur. We have worked previously with Luke Jackson as a motivational speaker to Year 11 students at careers events and he is passionate about his business and being able to run this successfully without moving out of the local area. It has been a fun challenge for the students and pupils designing a doughnut and demonstrating their creative flair”.

Alongside this, Year 12 Business Studies students have taken part in a national ‘Plan The World We Need‘ competition. It challenges students, as the citizens and planners of the future, to compile their best ideas about how to make local communities and places more sustainable. Our students have been focusing on Brampton and their ideas helping to reduce carbon emissions through public transport; increasing tourism to boost the local economy; and enlivening neglected spaces through planting and gardening through volunteering.

Tracey added: “As well as developing their research and presentation skills, the challenge has enabled the students to hone their team-working skills”.
