ULVERSTON's first climbing wall is ready to hit new heights as it opens its doors to the public next month.

A bouldering-only climbing facility, known as The Wall, is in the final stages of preparation before its grand opening on October 1.

Based in Quebec Street, plans for The Wall were first submitted to South Lakeland District Council in November last year by climbing enthusiast Joe Holden.

Mr Holden, who left his job at a law firm in Sheffield to purely focus on his new venture, saw a demand for a climbing wall which catered for all age groups and abilities in Ulverston.

After months of construction and renovation work, The Wall is almost ready to start offering climbing sessions and activities.

Mr Holden said it feels 'surreal' to reach the final few weeks.

"Everything went really well and I'm really happy with the way it's turned out," he said.

"It's really funky looking and looks great."

Mr Holden said he has been 'overwhelmed' with positive feedback about the wall.

He said: "It's quite moving how much positive feedback we've had.

"Climbing walls can be such a valuable space for the community where you can meet friends and hangout doing an activity which doesn't involve alcohol.

"I think that's something which is really lacking in this area."

Mr Holden hopes the climbing wall becomes a social hub for people as well as a fun and enjoyable, physical activity.

"This will hopefully be a place where people can develop confidence, learn new things and just have fun," he said.

"It's a great feeling of a physical workout whilst having fun."

The Wall is set to open to the public from October 1.

Booking will be available on The Wall's Facebook page a week before opening.
