VILLAGERS are being served with a far from lean, but certainly “green” convenience store from tomorrow.
The Co-op is revealing its revamped premises to the people of Ushaw Moor following a £585,000 investment in the Broom Lane store, which will run on 100-per cent renewable energy.
The community has already benefited, with four local people provided with new jobs.
Local good causes and store regulars will be supported via a membership scheme, while the Co-op will work with community partners as part of its Food Share scheme.
The premises has an in-store bakery, a free ATM, extra self-service tills and a Costa coffee point, while students with the TOTUM card and app, can pocket discounts off groceries.
Co-op area manager, Steve White, said: “We are delighted to have the chance to make such a significant investment here in Ushaw Moor.
“The team is really looking forward to serving the community with a new-look store that better suits the needs of people living in the area.
“We want customers to know they can become a member of their Co-op and make a difference every time they swipe their membership card buying own branded products.”
The store opens from 6am to 10pm daily from Thursday August 20.
