FIREFIGHTERS have sent a warning after being called out twice in one evening to help teens who had become trapped in children's swings.

Barrow fire crews were sent out twice on August 6, first having to a cut out a 15-year-old girl who had climbed inside a swing in Hindpool Urban Park.

The same night they were tasked with helping another teenager from a swing in the park on Lawson Street.

It prompted Barrow watch manager Shane Parkinson to send a warning to youths, urging them to stop ruining the enjoyment of the park for others, labelling their behaviour 'stupidity'.

He said: “The girl had become stuck in the swing and was unable to release herself. We used cutters to release her from the swing, which was embarrassing for her.

“I spoke to her and explained that she shouldn’t have been doing it.”

The swing frame at park in Hood Street, that was commissioned back in 2006, now lies empty after the other swing was taken out to comply with social distancing guidelines.

“Parks are for the enjoyment of everyone,” Mr Parkinson added.

“Through their stupidity they have ruined the enjoyment of the park for the kiddies who use it.”

The swing frame had to be cordoned off and Barrow Council was informed about the play equipment.

In the other incident at the Lawson Street park, a teenager was helped out of the swing but did not need to be cut out.

Mr Parkinson added: “When we were called to the second incident, we thought ‘two in one day, is somebody playing silly buggers?’.

Hindpool councillor Anne Burns echoed the firefighter’s words.

She said: “Hindpool Urban Park was built last time we were in recession and has hardly had any vandalism.

“If young people are using it, could they make sure they are not vandalising it or destroying anything.

“It’s there for young people to use.

"I hope they are not going to destroy it.”
