Market traders in West Cumbria will welcome back a familiar face when they reopen.

Allerdale council took over the official running of the borough's markets this week and have appointed Phil Byers as its markets manager.

Mr Byers worked as manager for Geraud UK for around 10 years, which ran the district's markets until the local authority agreed to bring the management back in-house.

Usually markets are held in Keswick, Workington and Wigton with a seasonal market in Silloth. All markets have been suspended since March.

Mr Byers officially took up his role with the council on Monday.

Markets were allowed to trade again from June 1. But Allerdale council, following consultation with members, town councils, and traders, has decided not to hold any until at least the week commencing June 15. It said it was investigating options for how markets can return in a way to keep staff, traders and members of the public safe.
