A LARGE empty building that was the former home of a furniture superstore is due to receive a new lease of life.

The former Sofa Group building in Barrow has been vacant since the company moved to a new base at Park Road, home to PC World a year ago.

Now the superstore will be the new base for the Sofa Group’s sister company, Sofa Wholesalers Barrow.

The Market Street shop, opposite Barrow Town Hall, will act as an outlet store for home and garden furniture.

No date has as yet been revealed by the company.

Renovations are due to take place on the site before the store opens.

The Sofa Group said: “Our sister company Sofa Wholesalers Barrow will be moving into our old furniture store on Market Street next to the Holiday Inn in Barrow.

“We will still be located at our new superstore next to Howdens. This means we will have two stores in Barrow now.

“It will be a furniture and garden outlet featuring pay weekly finance options, big brands, end of line furniture on sofa ranges, bedroom furniture, living room furniture, garden furniture and more.

“Due to COVID-19 we don’t know an exact date and renovations will take place to take it back to our standard.”

The building had been targeted by vandals.

Youths were said to have caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to the building and stock inside after breaking and entering.

The Sofa Group moved to its new base in Walney Road in May 2019.

The Market Street building was put up for sale and listed on the market for £700,000.
