A POPULAR destination for touring caravans and camping could see a new lease of life as plans have been approved for the change of use.

Blaithwaite House, just outside of Wigton, submitted plans to Allerdale Council to change the use of land and reconfigure the site.

The reconfiguration will include the installation of an additional 12 services pitches, nine timber built log cabins and a camping site.

Kate Glen-Donald, owner of Blaithwaite House explained what the changes will mean for Blaithwaite.

She said: "We've just got the planning permission to extend our season to 12 months with the camping and caravanning which is wonderful, it extends tourism through the 12 month period.

"We're putting on a lovely secluded area that can't be seen from anywhere for 12 fully serviced motorhomes and touring pitches and we are also putting on nine or ten lodges."

The lodges are being build to Kate and her husband Malcolm's own specifications, meaning there will be no others like them in the country.

"We've come up with this bespoke design, it's going to be fully made of wood, and it's going to look like Hansel and Gretel cottages with a nice glass front looking over the beautiful view," continued Mrs Glen-Donald.

"Everything in these cottage pods is going to be made in Britain, we really want to support the UK and as close to hope as possible so as much made in Cumbria as we can.

"We want everything to be as local as possible. We are going to open a farm shop and tearoom here and everything is going to be British and as local as we possibly can.

"So we are changing the direction a little bit of Blaithwaite into a holiday centre, but we still want to do our lovely weddings.

"But we are going to concentrate more on the holiday side of things."
