Three Cumbrian-based piemakers have triumphed at the 12th annual British Pie Awards.
Dales Traditional Butchers, in Kirkby Lonsdale, The Bay Horse Winton, near Kirkby Stephen and Huddleston’s Butchers, based in Windermere were among the 160 bakers, chefs and butchers from across the UK who put forward 884 pies in 23 classes to be judged by 110 experts.
The awards, held in the home of the pork pie Melton Mowbray, saw Dales Traditional Butchers win the Cold-Eating Savoury Pie Class with its pork and black pudding pie.
With the highest scoring pie of the whole competition, it won the Small Producer Award, dedicated to one small but mighty pie-maker each year.
Country pub, The Bay Horse Winton, was highly commended for its steak and ale pie in the Beef and Ale Pie Class.
Huddleston’s Butchers, a supreme champion in 2016, was given a highly commended in the Pork Pie Class.
Awards organiser Dr Matthew O’Callaghan said: “For the past 12 years, we’ve judged well over 9,000 pies since the awards were first founded in 2009.
"During that time the quality and range of pies submitted have increased significantly; a tribute to the craft and skills of the British piemaker."
