MAJOR plans to make a city supermarket more environmentally friendly have been submitted to council officials.

Tesco has outlined proposals to install solar panels to cover the majority of the roof space above their superstore by Warwick Road in Botcherby.

The solar panels would be placed on the flat roof, with the application adding that there would be no impact on glare to neighbouring businesses and houses.

The submission of the document has been made as part of the retailers nationwide plan for all of its stores to use 100 per cent renewable electricity by 2030.

If the application gets rubber-stamped by Carlisle City Council, Tesco says the supermarket would be much less dependant on power supplies by energy supplier Electricity North West.

It comes two years after the chain unveiled the latest step in a detailed green plan to reduce their carbon footprint across all of its branches.

Since the first of their plans got underway in 2007, the retailer has said the efficiency improvements have cut their nationwide electricity bill by a total of £200 million per year.

A Tesco spokesman shared more on their plans with The Cumberland News.

He said: “As a food retailer, our supply chain and long-term business success depend on the health of the natural environment.

“Our target is for Tesco to run on 100 per cent renewable electricity by 2030.

“To help us achieve that we are looking at renewable energy options at our stores including the Warwick Road superstore in Carlisle.”
