WHETHER it be a summer blockbuster or a wonderful winter’s tale, there are plenty of opportunities to go watch a film throughout the year.

And in Cumbria, we’re spoilt for choice on where to go.

This week, we asked readers of the News & Star to share their recommendations on the best cinemas in the county.

Here – in no particular order – are our readers’ choice.

1: VUE CINEMA, CARLISLE

The picture house, on Botchergate in the city centre, was recommended by several readers.

The seven-screen venue contains a total of 1,647 seats.

Aimie Fleming, Beverley Thomson and Debbie Betty Cartwright were among those to suggest it.

2: ALHAMBRA CINEMA, PENRITH

David Boothman said: “Without question, for us it’s the Alhambra in Penrith.

“Friendly and welcoming, you can enjoy a film comfortably and not feel ripped off.”

Gayle Crollman added: “Alhambra Cinema in Penrith.

“Local, comfortable and friendly.”

3: GAIETY CINEMA, WHITEHAVEN

Joshua Tyson said: “ I still remember the first time I went there to watch the first Jurassic Park, so nostalgia plays a big part.

“Also it’s not a huge commercial chain, it is independent and you’re not crammed in like sardines.

“It’s comfortable and the service is top class.

“It will always be number one for me.”

Dannielle Walker added: “I love the Gaiety in Whitehaven.

“Such a warm and welcoming atmosphere and the staff are lovely.”

J Ames Sutherland posted: “Gaiety in Whitehaven – it reopened after being shut for years and they’ve kept it the same so it’s like stepping back in time.

“It’s brilliant, great staff and comfy seats and a huge dose of nostalgia with every visit.”

4: ALHAMBRA CINEMA, KESWICK

Linda Margaret said: “The Alhambra in Keswick is a wonderful cinema.

“It is a beautiful building and the people who run it are friendly. It is a smaller venue and never too loud.

Leanne Bullough-Grave added: “The Alhambra Keswick. It’s a beautiful building, been lovingly restored and friendly people who run it and work there.

“On one visit my daughter and her friends were there first for a showing and the owner let them help her get the theatre ready for the show.”

5: ZEFFIRELLI’S CINEMA, AMBLESIDE

Rose Aitken posted: “Zeffirelli’s in Ambleside is lovely.

“Only a small cinema, very intimate, like stepping back in time.

“The staff are great too.”

6: PLAZA CINEMA, WORKINGTON

The cinema, based at Dunmail Park in Workington, was recommended to us by George Hayton and Ruth Ramsay.

7: RHEGED CINEMA, PENRITH

The two-screen independent cinema shows a range of the latest releases, classic and children’s films.

8: BREWERY ARTS CENTRE, KENDAL

Last, but by no means least, is the Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal. The venue contains three cinema screens which play a variety of movies.
