MOTORISTS are being warned of upcoming delays with the A590 being reduced to one lane over four days this month.

The road will be reduced to one lane with temporary traffic lights by the Beehive and Blue Light Hub site near Daltongate.

Electricity North West is installing the mains connections ahead of the opening of the site and two-way traffic lights will be in place.

The closures will take place on Monday December 9 and Tuesday December 10, and Monday December 16 and Tuesday December 17.

During peak times - 730am and 9am and 4pm and 5.30pm, the traffic lights will be manually operated.

The existing lights will be switched off.

One motorist, who travels between Ulverston and Barrow every day to work at the shipyard, said he suspects many drivers will opt to use the 'unofficial diversion'.

"Obviously it's not ideal for HGVs but I imagine a lot of people will simply just use the Coast Road instead of taking their chances with the A590," he said.

"We know from past experience that, no matter how much planning goes into it and even with manually operated lights, it's bound to be a nightmare and I'd just rather not risk it."

Ulverston's Deputy Mayor Amanda Rigg said residents had reported problems with the sequence of the existing lights.

"We're hoping they'll fix that at the same time," she said.

"The work has to be done, there's no doubt about it, and there's going to be delays but if it has to be done then it has to be done."
