A plan for 39 new homes at Cartmel was approved at a South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) meeting, although it contains a lower percentage of affordable housing than when it was first presented to councillors in 2017.

The application, filed by Holbeck Homes (Cartmel) Limited, will see a combination of apartments and detached and semi-detached homes built on land located to the south of Haggs Lane.

The original proposal contained 14 affordable dwellings, but this has now been reduced to eight due to a variety of factors, including 'the current market conditions and the wider economic uncertainty due to the continued delay of any decision on Brexit' and the dwellings’ remote location making it more difficult to secure labour at competitive rates.

Following discussion, the planning committee voted in favour of the development.

Holbeck Homes is part of south Cumbrian Holker Group, which also includes Burlington Stone, Cartmel Racecourse and tourist attract Holker Hall and Gardens.
