Stefan Scougall has been training with Carlisle United’s youth team in his bid to boost his fitness for a first-team return.
Boss Steven Pressley decided against taking the midfielder to Newport as Scougall comes back from a hamstring injury.
Instead the Scot did extra work back at Brunton Park, with next weekend’s visit of Crewe being eyed for a return to availability.
Pressley said: “The reason we left him was that training [on the Friday] was not of a high intensity and we felt it would make better use him training with the under-18s and doing additional work to get more into his legs.”
Nathan Thomas missed Saturday’s game with illness.
United will send a reserve side to Rangers tomorrow for a friendly at the Glasgow club’s training centre.
