Carlisle United 1 Oldham Athletic 0: Olufela Olomola's third-minute goal was enough for Carlisle United to secure their first home win since the opening day.

The loan striker scored his fifth of the season and United saw it through for a clean sheet and three important points at Brunton Park.

The Blues struck after ref Marc Edwards turned down the visitors' claims for a free-kick in midfield.

Nathan Thomas pounced on the ball before Harry McKirdy drove into the box, Olomola then receiving his lay-off and drilling home.

That saw United through to the break with the advantage, with much of the rest of the first half of poor quality.

Carlisle, who had Christie Elliott back in their side for the suspended Jack Bridge, could have added to their lead in the opening 15 minutes with Olomola denied at close range and midfielder Mo Sagaf denied by keeper Gary Woods.

United's passing, though, was often poor and this allowed Oldham to play their way into some useful positions.

Dino Maamria's side, though, struggled for serious chances, with Chris Missilou shooting over the bar and Desire Segbe Azankpo heading wide.

A corner routine at the other end saw Sagaf shoot over while in defence Gethin Jones and Elliott made important interceptions.

At the break Thomas was replaced by Hallam Hope after an ineffective 45-minute showing, but United should have been pegged back on 48 minutes when their latest attempt to play out gave Oldham their best chance.

Mohammed Maouche was played in and should have made it 1-1, but he shot wide of the right-hand post.

Carlisle pushed again with McKirdy having a free-kick saved and Hope firing wide.

McKirdy and Sagaf had further attempt before Ryan Loft came on for the injured McKirdy.

Clear-cut chances were few, although Loft could have made it two when he showed good pace and strength to get behind Tom Hamer down the left, his attempt saved by Gary Woods.

Olomola saw a shot saved while Oldham, for their possession, struggled for serious chances with Nathaniel Knight-Percival solid at the back for the Cumbrians.

Missilou saw a volley saved by Collin late on but Carlisle's defence otherwise kept the Latics at bay to seal a first home win in six and move up two places to 16th in League Two.
