A holiday business at Allithwaite near Grange-over-Sands has applied for planning permission to site four new camping pods.

Mr and Mrs Andrew Cotter, of The Pastures Lodge Park, Templand Lane, have submitted the application.

The pods would go on a small field near to the existing business and would involve the creation of an access drive and connection to a wastewater treatment plant.
Lower Allithwaite Parish Council objected on the grounds of ‘overdevelopment’ and ‘unacceptable’ extra traffic.

Two other objections have been submitted to South Lakeland District Council which will decide the application at a meeting on Thursday, August 29.

The objectors said the proposed site was greenfield and is outside the original lodge park.

“There needs to be an end to how many dwellings can be squeezed on to the site and it appears to have reached its capacity,” an objector wrote.

The applicant’s agents said the pods would contribute to the tourism economy and stressed that they are not residential dwellings.

Cumbria County Council as highways authority has not raised any problems with the plan, which is being recommended for approval by SLDC.

A report by planning officers said the four pods would represent a ‘small addition’ to the site and would be ‘appropriate’.

It said there are no residential homes close by and the four pods would only generate a ‘small’ amount of traffic.

“The proposed camping pods are modest in size with a height of 2.8 metres and the topography of the site is relatively flat. The combination of these factors means that no long-distance views of the proposal would be possible,” said the planning officer’s report.

The company has also submitted plans for a single holiday lodge at the site, which is also being recommended for approval by planners.
