An event to help contractors and subcontractors in the construction industry get to grips with new VAT rules will be held next month.

Accountancy firm Saint & Co is hosting the event on Thursday September 12 at the Auctioneer in Carlisle, to help guide people through the Reverse Charge for Construction Services, which will be introduced on October 1 by HMRC.

It will change the way businesses invoice clients and pay bills and could mean businesses supplying construction services may not need to charge VAT on sales.

Leading expert Neil Owen, who has over 30 years involvement in VAT, is the guest speaker at the event.

Mr Owen is a fellow of the CIOT and of the British Institute of Agricultural Consultants, and was, for 10 years, national secretary of the VAT Practitioners Group and for six the general editor of the annual CCH VAT Planning.

He will go through the changes for the construction industry, talk about when businesses can charge VAT and when they should not; and the changes which are expected and their possible cashflow implications.

There will also be a question-and-answer session for people to put their concerns or issues to Mr Owen.

A Saint & Co spokesman said: "This is the ideal opportunity to find out more about what the changes will mean to your business and speak to an expert who can guide you through it.

"If you are likely to be affected by these changes, Saint & Co can work with you to ensure you are ready for the new system."
