A well-known Cumbrian building society has donated over £18,000 to a children's charity.

At The Cumberland’s AGM, held on Tuesday, members voted to donate the money to Barnardo’s.

Each year the organisation pledges a donation to a local charity for every vote it receives, and this year Barnardo’s was chosen as the beneficiary.

A total of £18,813 was handed over to Helen Evans, regional fundraising manager of Barnardo’s by chief executive Des Moore and Trevor Hebdon, The Cumberland’s outgoing chairman.

Des said: “The response from our members has been outstanding again this year and I would like to thank everyone who voted.

"As a customer-owned organisation we are committed to making a positive difference and supporting the communities we live and work in.”

“Barnardo’s commitment to supporting young people and their families in order to achieve their ambitions and potential in a positive and engaging way is inspiring and, importantly, is making an incredible difference to the lives of many young people in our region.

"We’re privileged to be working together with them this year.”

Helen said: “We are delighted that The Cumberland has chosen to support Barnardo’s and are extremely grateful for this donation, which will be used to support vulnerable children and families through our services in this region.

"We also look forward to working closely with the team at The Cumberland through volunteering opportunities, financial awareness training and other exciting events that they are already planning with our young people.”
