Carlisle has been ranked as the unluckiest place in the UK, according to new research.

Data compiled by lotto betting provider Lottoland found that there were only 0.24 wins per 100 people in Carlisle, with Cambridge, Cardiff and Brighton emerging as the places with the luckiest residents.

The provider compared the percentage of winning bets on their sites with the number of residents in each town and city with a population of more than 20,000 in 2018.

However, with 4,143 bets placed in Carlisle and 801 total wins, almost one in five were winners.

Carlisle, Lisburn and Newtownabbey, which were found to be locations where residents were most likely to lose.

The luckiest regions, according to the number of people who won through the site in 2018, were as follows:

1. Cambridge – 8.03 (wins per 100 people)

2. Cardiff – 7.64

3. Brighton – 5.20

4. Chichester – 3.87

5. Bangor – 3.17

6. Worcester – 2.45

7. Aberdeen – 2.41

8. Lichfield – 2.29

9. Manchester – 2.25

10. Durham – 2.24

Conversely, the unluckiest regions, with the lowest number of wins per 100 people, were found to be:

1. Carlisle – 0.24 (wins per 100 people)

2. Lisburn – 0.34

3. Newtonabbey – 0.38

4. Bath – 0.45

5. Edinburgh – 0.60

6. Portsmouth – 0.64

7. Winchester – 0.64

8. Musselburgh – 0.68

9. Canterbury – 0.69

10. Exeter – 0.72
