A Carlisle man remains critically ill in hospital after sustaining a head injury in the Botchergate area.

Police believe the 55-year-old was the victim of a serious assault.

He was found in the early hours of Saturday morning in Robert Street, off Crown Street.

He was rushed to hospital in Newcastle, where he continues to fight for his life.

However they are continuing to work to piece together exactly what happened. Officers are continuing to appeal for witnesses to come forward.

A Cumbria Police spokesman said: "If anyone was in the area of Robert Street, James Street and Crown Street, between 4am and 5am, they are asked to think back and see if they remember anything that might help our investigation.

“Please contact us if you have any information that might assist the inquiry.”

The injured man, who is being cared for at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, is described as 5ft 9ins tall and of very stocky build.

He was wearing a pale blue short-sleeved patterned shirt with a dark body warmer on top, dark blue jeans and Chelsea boots.
