Seventeen years on from their debut album and Wheatus remain best-remembered for their adolescent call-to-arms Teenage Dirtbag.

The timelessness of the song was underlined when the band toured with Busted last year and thousands of youngsters sang the words back.

“That’s probably the most astonished I’ve ever been on-stage, when those kids sang back to us every night,” says the band’s Brendan B Brown.

“I thought it would be good, but I wasn’t prepared for the crazy reception we got. It was extraordinary for a support act to get that kind of love.”

Brendan is now also the only remaining member of the original line-up, but it happy with the situation: “I spent quite a few years writing and demoing the first album by myself. When I consider the line-up changes over the years it’s 98% positive memories. There was only ever one true falling out.”

The band come to Carlisle on Monday to play the Old Fire Station. Support is from Frank Hamilton and also Gabrielle Sterbenz & Lady Danger. For tickets, go to www.oldfirestation.carlisle.city
